Growing up, teaching was never really a thought I had when people asked me what I wanted to be when I was older. The idea of becoming a teacher didn’t occur until I graduated from high school and become an Education Assistant with School District 57. Fresh out of high school, I was jobless and needed to crack down and seriously think about what I wanted to do as a career. My mom, who has been a secretary with SD57 for the last 15 or so years, told me about becoming an Education Assistant as they made good money for a young adult, would offer me good experience, and who knows maybe that would be my career choice but I wouldn’t have known if I didn’t try. After some debate if I should apply to work as an EA, I decided my best option would be to volunteer at the school my mom worked at to see if it would be something I would be interested in. After a few weeks of volunteering, I knew that working with children was something I was passionate about and felt like it was my “calling”. I then worked as a casual EA for four out of my five years, with one year taking a contract as a one on one EA. I knew shortly into my time as an EA that teaching was the path I wanted to go to, I just needed to complete my four year degree and apply to the program. And after many different experiences working with children ages 5 to 18, working hard to complete my undergrad degree, I finally was excepted into the Bachelor or Education program at UNBC. Teaching, working with children, and being a positive role model are some things I am very passionate about. Being a teacher is rewarding, humbling, and fulfilling. I wouldn’t have been led down this path if it weren’t for my mom. I have her to thank for helping me find my passion.
