The First peoples principles of learning are an extremely crucial part of teaching. Before I became a student teacher, I wasn’t fully aware of all that went into planning and prepping for teaching and what we as teacher need to base our learning around, such as the curriculum and the FPPL. During my first practicum, I am not going to lie, it felt like there were moments that I was just making a check mark beside the FPPL requirements because I had to rather than because I found importance or a connection between my lessons and the FPPL. After we had a guest speaker come to our class, was when it flipped a switch for me. I always knew how important the FPPL was and I knew that it was my goal to incorporate the FPPL into my lessons in a meaningful way, but I never felt fully confident in my “why”. After our guest speaker came is when I understood the passion and purpose behind the FPPL. Our guest speaker handed out a print out of the FPPL for each of us and after her presentation, we were asked to highlight or check off what she applied in her practice that resonates with the FPPL. Every single section of the FPPL was highlighted in some way. This was due to her dedication and purpose with applying her own pedagogy with the FPPL and making them cohesive. Moving forward, especially for my EDUC practica, I want to authentically incorporate the FPPL into my lessons with intention and purpose. I want to apply the FPPL in a way that is driven behind who I am as a teacher and what I want my students to experience within their learning. I think the FPPL is an important aspect in teaching that needs to be understood in a way that feels meaningful to the teachers uniqueness and what they can offer to the classroom learning.
