Inclusive education has become a crucial part of how we as teacher approach teaching in our classrooms. Having been in the Education program for a little over a year now, I have realized more than ever that education is not linear. Everyone has needs that need to be met in order to be supported for them to best succeed. Whether that is various learning styles, exceptionalities, and physical or mental health. Throughout practicum experiences, learning in the classroom as a teacher candidate, or in my past experience as working as an education assistant, I have found that having an inclusive classroom and providing a space where all learners can feel understood and acknowledged for who they are and what they need.

In block four, our BEd cohort was able to have a course on diverse classrooms with Gretchen Vogelsang. This course offered a deep understanding in how we as educators can support our students for thriving education experience. We looked at who we are as people and what our own needs are and how we can support ourselves to support others. Understanding who we are was very eye opening, as we were able to understand our teacher preferences, what we need to feel supported in the classroom, and how we approach various situations for the outcomes we are looking for. My biggest takeaway from that class was understanding the strength in diversity. Everyone has something to offer, no matter their differences.

My passion as an educator is to create a safe learning environment where all students needs are met. I want to offer various ways to present information so that my students feel they are being understood in how they learn, I want to create accommodations for my students (targeting all, most, and few) so that all students are able to participate in the classroom and learn various material. I want my students to feel confident in who they are, and I want them to know that everyone has differences and struggles, we just need to work together to best support each other to succeed. In my classroom, I will offer a safe space for students to come to for support, be an advocate for my students, strive to be a life-long learner to continue pushing for an inclusive classroom, and to have open communication with students and parents to best support them as a human being. Inclusive education is extremely important to me, I want all students to feel welcomed in my classroom and feel that they have the supports to best succeed.
